Proposal

Title of Project : Giving back to my New York Home
Abstract of Project  I am Savannah Steffensen. I am an Elementary Education major.I will be doing an alternative spring break (7 days) to New York City. I will leave March 11, 2017 and get back on March 18, 2017.We will be helping the hungry and the homeless through the program Break a Difference. I want to participate in this program because I lived there and I have seen how much this service is needed. I want to give back to this community.
Larger Purpose Throughout the United States thousands of people go hungry every day. I hope to get experience in soup kitchens and food banks to help the issue in Utah when I come back. I also want to gain perspective with this community because I am going to be a teacher, and to a degree I will be working with students who will be hungry. I want to know how to help them and gain compassion has a teacher for my students.
Project Goal: Develop great compassion and awareness of the nation’s hunger problem.
1-3 Outcome(s) I will interact with people with different cultures and backgrounds.
Deliverable(s) 40 hours of service log sheet, journal of my experience, pictures to document.
Differentiation -- This project will help me stand out because I will not only have done 40 hours of service, I will have helped one of the nation’s biggest cities with their hunger and homelessness issue. I will have seen a different culture than here in Utah. And as a teacher I will get to experience what some of my students will go through while they are in school.

Estimated Timeline -- March 11, 2017- march 18, 2017. March 11 will be a travel day and march 18th will be a travel day. We will be doing service and working with the program everyday. They have allotted us 2 times to explore the city throughout the whole week. We will be starting in the morning with service and come home in the evening. I am not sure of the exact times of service. I only have the timeline that the program provides. I will log all the hours that we do service when I am there. If there isn’t 40 hours of service I will find a way to get more service hours by volunteering at a school to tutor children.
